Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are a crucial part of the higher education system in the United States. Currently, there are 101 HBCUs in the United States, including public and private institutions. Of these HBCUs, 51 are public universities, and the remaining 50 are private institutions. These universities are spread across 19 states, primarily in the southern and eastern regions of the country. These universities were initially established to provide educational opportunities for African American students who were previously barred from attending white institutions due to segregation and discrimination.
